Main objective(s) Ambition School Leadership is a newly formed social enterprise which supports school improvement through targeted development for school leaders. Taking innovative, creative, and flexible approaches to leadership development, Ambition School Leadership has set the pace in the sector and has big plans for the future.
` The People Director will be at the heart of these plans, helping to ensure the right people with the right skills are in the right roles. The People Director will work closely with the Senior Leadership Team on all aspects of organisational effectiveness, ensuring that the culture enables people to do their best work, and that HR policies and processes are aligned with the needs of the organisation.
Bringing together the various aspects of Human Resources such as learning and development, culture, change and transformation, organisational health, reward and recognition, talent management, resourcing and capability, staff engagement, you will lead on the implementation and embedding of our HR policies and procedures, and ensuring that the organisation’s culture is aligned with our plans for growth.
Role requirements The activities within this role will require travel, including between our offices in Birmingham, London, Manchester, Leeds and Newcastle. We are willing to consider flexible working options. Occasional weekend work may be required.
Key responsibilities
? You will be the owner and champion of the entire HR team and the services we provide
? You will play a key role in strengthening the organisational culture and improving trust, drawing on information from our own assessment methodology and staff survey results
? You will act as, and be seen as, a respected and trusted strategic adviser on people-related issue to the organisation’s leadership and wider team
? You will foster impeccable and sustainable relationships with all parts of the organisation in order to ensure our internal employer brand is achievable, respected and inspiring
? You will oversee various initiatives across your People and HR remit, working effectively in partnership with directors across the organisation to deliver bespoke, high quality interventions
? You will ensure that the HR management information produced highlights both strength and areas for improvement - shining a light on our happy people and high performers and at the same time helps to identify areas where more support and more engagement is needed
Specific areas
? Policy/project developments - take the lead on specific HR policies/projects and deliver on them to agreed quality and time requirements
? Staff recruitment - oversee our staff recruitment processes, ensuring that we are attracting the right candidates into the right roles
? Making connections - liaising consistently with the wider staff team and building successful bridges between the HR ops team, payroll, HR advice, L&D, ER, Internal Communications, Reward & Recognition, talent management and recruitment
? Talent Management – working with leaders from across the organisation to understand the capabilities of their staff, to develop strategies for identifying capability gaps, and approaches to improve on these capabilities. Establish key competencies for each department and role to enable a successful talent pipeline and succession planning process
? Reward and recognition - keep up to date with market intelligence on salaries and remuneration for our business areas and ensure that our remuneration and reward packages remains competitive
? Employee relations - possess a strong knowledge of employment law and apply this to ensure the effective resolution of employee relations issues (e.g. grievances, disciplinary matters, appeals, etc.)
? Diversity and inclusion - work with the wider leadership team to shape and refine our EDI approach and how we should effectively bring this to life as a 21st century employer looks like
? Change management - work with the wider leadership team to ensure the structure and arrangement of the organisation is appropriate and meets our operational and strategic needs. Where necessary, advise on re-organisations, organisational development, redundancies and transfers. Ensure that where business changes take place, staff are central to decision making and implementation and are given the necessary opportunities and information
? Organisational wellbeing – work alongside the Internal Communications team to ensure staff wellbeing is promoted and that we continue to foster safe and healthy workplaces and workplace practices
? Team leadership - ensure the HR team is a collective unit that works together partnering with the wider organisation to ensure we collectively deliver on our organisational mission and does so being credible, influential, sensitive, confidential, competent and knowledgeable
? Customer service – develop positive and supportive relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, and to provide them with excellent service within appropriate timeframes. Learn actively from customer feedback, comments and suggestions to review and improve existing processes, and by doing so to anticipate other customer’s needs. Understand situations from the customers’ perspective so that appropriate and relevant solutions can be identified

Qualities/qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualities:
• Mission: a strong commitment to education, the non-profit sector and raising the aspirations, achievements and life chances of all children
• Proven and substantial experience of managing a HR / People function and leading teams in a comparable organisation or environment
• Proven and substantial experience of working with and influencing senior internal stakeholders
• Strong communications skills with the ability to build strong relationships internally and externally, and collaborate with other experts to produce outstanding results
• Experience of successfully developing People strategy and practices which strengthen and align with an organisation’s strategy
• A proven track record in meeting targets within a high-performance environment
• Experience in designing, improving and implementing high-performing HR systems, policies and procedures
• Excellent written skills with the ability to write clearly for non-HR professional and experts
• Strong knowledge of UK employment law and best practice methods
• Demonstrated experience of using own initiative and working with high levels of autonomy
• Ability to manage sensitive information in a confidential manner
• Ability to inspire, motivate and lead across a core team and beyond
• CIPD member and qualified to appropriate level or equivalent by experience
• Outstanding attention to detail and organisational skills
Desirable
• Previous experience in leadership and or executive coaching - a strength both in internal team interactions and also in terms of our wider work with schools across our country
